Schools integrating PE4life’s Core Principles, have seen significant improvements in several areas. As expected, data collected at PE4life model sites by research universities demonstrates a track record of increasing fitness levels. In addition to this and most notably, schools we’ve worked with show significant improvements in academic performance and decreased disciplinary incidents. These measurable outcomes have gained the attention of business, foundation, school and community leaders who have since come together to use PE4life as a platform for collaboration.

Increased Fitness Levels
Woodland Elementary, a K-5 school in the urban core of Kansas City, Missouri integrated PE4life’s Core Principles into their program during the 2005-2006 school year. Within one school year, the number of students in a healthy fitness zone increased dramatically.
We had a male 7th grade student that weighed 268 lbs last year and was being considered for a diabetes test through his doctor, so we started a program in our PE4life wellness center where he came in 3 days a week plus he also had a 50 minute PE class. During the time from January 2008 to May 2008 he lost 30 lbs. His numbers for his health test greatly lowered and he is striving to keep losing weight.

Decreased Disciplinary Incidents
Woodland Elementary School, a K-5 school in the urban core of Kansas City, Missouri, integrated PE4life’s Core Principles into their program in the 2005-2006 school year. After just one year, the number of out-of-school suspensions dropped from 1177 to 392, that’s a reduction 67%. The number of discipline incidents dropped from 228 to 94, a percentage of 59.

Sustained Discipline Decrease
The number of out-of-school suspensions and discipline incidents have been significantly lower over the past 4 years since PE4life’s Core Principles were integrated. The average number of out-of-school suspensions over the past 4 years is 577, compared to 1,177 in 2004-2005 school year, a 51% decrease. The average number of discipline incidents is now 157, compared to 228 the year before working with PE4life.
PE4life has had a tremendous influence on the lives of our students. It’s not just the increased levels of fitness we are seeing in our kids which has everyone excited. Students are also more motivated throughout the day, their enthusiasm is way up, and discipline issues are way down.

Improvements in Academic Performance
A PE4life Academy Training Center at Naperville Central High School of the Naperville, Illinois School District 203 integrated a new Learning Readiness PE (LRPE) class for the 2005-2006 school year. This program found a link between physical education and improved math and literacy scores when offering physical activity before reading and math classes. Significant improvements were seen from the first year. Students enrolled in a PE class immediately before math increased their algebra readiness by an average of 20% compared to only 4% in the students who took PE several hours after math class.
Additionally, significant improvements in literacy scores were seen when incorporating reading and comprehension activities into PE (a LRPE course). In one semester, those with LRPE immediately before literacy increased their reading and comprehension scores by 1.4 on a grade level equivalency scale. Results showed that students enrolled in LRPE an hour before reading class scored nearly twice as high as those who had a longer time frame between the classes.
