PhilsBlog

Welcome!

Welcome to Phil’s Blog!

For some of you this maybe your first visit to our PE4life website, for others, this might not be your first visit to our site, but it is probably your first visit to our new and improved website.

One new feature on our PE4life website will be my blog. Yes I am going to join the “technology” generation and share my thoughts about PE (PE4life) in a blog. A few months ago I didn’t even know what a blog was or why they existed. Then I found out I was going to have my own blog. I knew nothing about blogging, so I told the PE4life headquarters I needed some help. They sent me a link to a site called INFORMATION FOR BLOG BEGINNERS.  It was very helpful. The first thing I learned was there are no rules to blogging. I said I could handle that, just write thoughts about PE to be shared with others.

So my first blog is a warm welcome to you. Obviously you have an interest in physical education and children, other wise you would not be visiting our website. I just hope as the year progresses, I can share with you at least one thought that will make a difference in the physical education program in your community.

I don’t have all the answers, but after 35 years of teaching physical education, I have learned a few things that might help out a rookie or two and maybe even a veteran teacher or two. Besides PE teachers, I hope parents, school administrators, and concerned citizens can gain valuable knowledge about quality 21st century PE.

You can read my bio to get a little more info on my background in PE. At times I might even become a little critical of our profession. The reason I can be critical, any thing that has ever been done wrong in PE I have personally done in my career. Early in my teaching career I was a Rodney Dangerfield in education, absolutely NO RESPECT for my job. PE was not respected by the students, parents, administration, or the community.

If physical education was a business, we went bankrupt about 20 years ago. One important rule in business, the customer is always right. As a profession physical education teachers nation wide we need to ask a tough questions, why is physical education being treated like a second class citizen? Sure we can blame NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND, but physical education was being cut back even before NCLB.

Our school district evaluated why was PE not respected in our community. We stared a new delivery (PE4life approach) and it has been very successful. As my blog continue in the future, I will share with you in detail how we overhauled our PE program.

By the end of my teaching career (yes I am retired from teaching), our  parents rated physical education the number one curriculum for satisfaction above science, math, and English.

I had a doctor tell me if schools would teach physical education the PE4life way, physical education teachers could do more to affect the health of this nation than he could as a medical doctor.

To go from a Rodney Dangerfield to start of my career to teaching the most important curriculum in the school and having a job just as important as a medical doctor, now that is a dramatic change.

I am now finished with my first blog and I did not make any mistakes since there are no rules.

Aaron's Gravatar Phil,
Is there a way to see what the winners of the PEP Grants are doing with their money? Just looking for some ideas and am curious what others are doing. Thanks.

Cary's Gravatar I'm the only PE teacher at my site, and I get so tired defending my curriculum to other teachers. I don't give up, but I get no respect for all I do.
It is nice to see that "Brain Base Research" is supporting what I've been saying all along.

Joe Herzog's Gravatar It is a constant challenge, defending physical education and it's rightful place in the curriculum.
It is because of the leadership we have received from Phil, Paul, Tim, Dr. Ratey, Jean Blaydes-Madigan and Cathy Hess and so many others, that our job has become profoundly easier.
We owe these remarkable educators a true debt of gratitude, but more than that, we owe them as well as our students our best efforts. Step up and speak up with pride. As a physical
educator, you provide a singularly unique component to the education of the children of this nation. Stand tall and be proud for you are the very foundation of the education in the United States.
