Mr Woodcock - movie destroys PE image

I am not endorsing the movie Mr Woodcock, but we need to prepare ourselves for the potential negative impact of this movie. Please go to the NASPE website to find their position paper that gives us a chance to defend the NEW PE. (PE4life)

Don’t take my next comment wrong, but in some ways this movie is a wake up call to every physical education teacher in the country. This movie sounds like it represents the truth. I know they're using comedy to get their message across, but there is a large percentage of the baby boomers that have lifetime memories of their PE experience which is just like the one portrayed in this movie. It is sad the number of leadership people in this country that carry this same image of PE into their decision making. The other sad story, there are a few PE programs in our country today that are still delivered this way. Trust me, it might not be happening in any school in your community, but there are some really sad PE programs being delivered to children all over the United States. Just another reminder, our advocacy work has just begun. Is anyone going to attend the movie?

Joe Herzog's Gravatar I've already written the movie company and told them we view the movie as "insulting." and "inane." I admitted that there have been and still are PE programs that are not up to modern content based standards, but that is the case in any profession or occupation (Lawyers, auto mechanics, plumbers come to mind, but I dont want to offend just them.).I told them that we, as physical educators have worked very diligently over the last 30 years to improve the quality of our profession in every way.

We will survive the "Mr. Woodcock" debacle just as we survived the "Dodgeball" foolishness. A great time to write a letter to the local newspaper or go before the school board. Remember, every crisis is an opportunity. We are better than "Mr. Woodcock", at least the vast majority of us, so make our case. Show some mild offense, be completely dismissive of the "Mr. Woodcock" personality and use the opportunity to describe what quality physical education looks like and how valuable it is to children and to society as a whole.
