As Obesity Fight Hits Cafeteria, Many Fear a Note From School (Jodi Kandor/New York Times 1/8/07)
WMAQ-NBC5 recently ran a story on the positive effects of a daily PE4life program on students’ academic performance. This Chicago NBC affiliate produced a feature on the PE4life Academy in Naperville and the incredible results they are seeing as they have students exercise in PE class prior to reading and math classes. Some of the students used to read below their grade level, and they struggled in math. But now, a daily dose of sweat has pumped up their math and reading scores, NBC5’s Nesita Kwan reported. They begin every school day in a gym class that flows right into academic curriculum. The video the kids watch while exercising is of a book they’re reading, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."
In the literacy class, the students participating in the “Learning Readiness PE” class increased their reading level a half a grade level more than the students without PE. Those with PE actually increased their reading ability 1.4 grade levels in one semester.
In the math experiment, those with “Learning Readiness PE” prior to math increased their algebra readiness by an average of 20% compared to 2% in the students without PE.
